Discover the official residence of the Danish Royal Family and one of Copenhagen’s most iconic landmarks. Amalienborg Palace is renowned for its elegant Rococo architecture, royal history, and the famous Royal Guard (Den Kongelige Livgarde).
One of the highlights of any visit is the daily Changing of the Guard ceremony. Every day, the Royal Guard marches from its barracks at Rosenborg Castle through the streets of Copenhagen to Amalienborg Palace, where the ceremony takes place at exactly 12:00 noon. This colorful tradition offers visitors a unique glimpse into Denmark’s royal heritage and military customs.
Amalienborg consists of four identical palace buildings surrounding a grand octagonal square with an impressive equestrian statue of King Frederik V at its center. The four palaces are known as Christian VII’s Palace, Frederik VIII’s Palace, Christian IX’s Palace, and Christian VIII’s Palace.
Within Christian VIII’s Palace, visitors can explore the fascinating Amalienborg Museum. The museum tells the story of the Danish monarchy over the past 150 years, beginning with King Christian IX and Queen Louise, often referred to as “the in-laws of Europe” because their children married into many of Europe’s royal families and ascended the thrones of Denmark, England, Greece, and Russia.
The museum offers a rare opportunity to step inside the private rooms of Danish kings and queens, preserved to reflect the styles, tastes, and personalities of different generations of the royal family. Wander through elegant Victorian salons, military-inspired interiors, and richly decorated royal apartments while learning about the lives of Denmark’s monarchs. The museum’s modern exhibition spaces also provide insight into the role of the monarchy in the 21st century, exploring royal traditions, responsibilities, and everyday life within the Danish Royal Family.
This visit offers a fascinating journey through Danish history, royal culture, and centuries of tradition at the heart of Copenhagen.
